Purple Heart Month
This month our library is dedicated to paying our respects to all the brave men and women wounded or killed in combat. The official Purple Heart Day is observed on the 7th day of August each year, commemorating the historic day in 1782 that General George Washington commissioned the first Purple Heart Medal.. It is the oldest military award, first being awarded to soldiers in World War I and still given to soldiers today. It was World War II, when the qualification to receive the Purple Heart Medal changed to honor those who were wounded or killed in combat – that is why it’s recipients often call it “the medal that nobody wants”. It is unknown how many soldiers actually received it. Observe our Wall of Honor where we have put a purple heart on the photos of our Hardeman County veterans who we know have recieved a Purple Heart.

Bolivar-Hardeman County Library partners with Tennessee R.E.A.D.S. so that patrons can check out eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, video, etceteras from the comfort of their homes. How do I get a library card?
How do I get a library card?
Getting your first library card is free for Hardeman County residents. All you need to bring is a photo ID with your current address. (If your photo ID does not have a correct address, we will accept a piece of mail with the current address.)
How many books/movies can I check out?
How many books/movies can I check out?
The first time you get a library card, you may check out 2 items. Once you return those 2 items, you may check out up to 25 items! 5 of those items can be movies.

Books are due two weeks after their checkout date. Movies are due five days after their check out date. You may call once to renew the items over the phone.

Yes! Our staff will fax your documents for you at the circulation desk. The cost is $.25 per page. Please note that front and back counts as two pages.

Yes! Prints are 25 cents per copy for black and white and 50 cents per copy for colored pages. Please note front and back copies count as two pages.

We offer several ways to print.
Bluetooth (from your phone straight to the printer) (Note: this way is least recommended. Prints are often distorted this way, especially photos from iPhones.)

Can I get a document notarized at the library?
Can I get a document notarized at the library?
Yes. Our director, Becky White, can notorize your documents. The cost is $5 per document. You just need to bring your ID. Also, if you need a witness, bring one, as we cannot witness for you. According to policy, we will not notarize birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificate, wills, or trusts. Lastly, please note that documents must be signed in the presence of the notary. We recommend calling before to make sure that our notary is present.

Yes. The cost is $1 per page and 50 cents per half page.
Can I donate books/magazines to the library?
Can I donate books/magazines to the library?
Yes! As long as the books and magazines are in good condition, we will gladly accept them. Please mark out personal information before bringing them to the library.

Yes, we can scan documents to the public access computers for $.25 per page.

No! While we encourage getting a library card, you only need a library card to check out materials.
What is an interlibrary loan?
What is an interlibrary loan?
If our library does not have the book you are looking for, we are able to request interlibrary loans through other libraries in Tennessee. This service is free of charge to library card holders. We will request the book for you. Interlibrary loans typically take 1-2 weeks to arrive. Once it arrives, we will call and let you know it is ready for pickup.

Yes! We ask that you complete the online application before coming. Once you complete the application, we will reach out to arrange a time for you to volunteer.

Yes! The public is welcome to browse the history room. A library card is not necessary. We also offer genealogy research assistance. However, we ask that you submit a request before coming in so that we have time to research and prepare for your needs.
